What is HeroCraft.games?
1: Let's talk about the concept
I guess an explanation is in order... What is this all about anyway?
Good question. I'm certain I will spend quite a bit more time laying out my thoughts around this project as it continues to evolve. But for now, I'll give you the very high level overview of what I'm thinking.
I enjoy playing games. I've been doing it for most of my life. But it wasn't until very recently that I really started to understand WHAT it is that I liked about these games. Let me give you a list of some I've invested a lot of time into over the years:
Tabletop games:
- Magic the Gathering
- Legend of the Five Rings
- Keyforge
- Dungeons & Dragons
Video games (PC):
- World of Warcraft
- Guild Wars 2
- Diablo 2 & 3
- Path of Exile
- Eve Online
Again, that's not an extensive list by any means. But those are the ones I've spent the most time with. Recently a friend of mine tried to convince me to invest in a new game. That game in particular wasn't clicking with me as much as some of the others I've been playing recently, though I wasn't entirely sure why until I tried to explain it to him. I'm not sure I ever made my point of view clear, but the exercise allowed me to finally see what it was about these games that sucked me in.
It's actually fairly simple. All of the above have some level of Skill/Talent/Feat/Gear/Card building mechanic that provides an opportunity to craft a unique experience (obviously some more than others). Because of that, in almost every case, I've found myself over the years spending almost as much time OUTSIDE of the game planning/crafting my character/deck/build as I do actually playing the game.
Am I alone in this? I'm almost certain that I am not. And thus the idea was born...
